It was a fine weekend where I supposed to stay at home to do my house chores but ended up I last minute decided to join Robin for shooting. The moment he asked for it, I got feeling I might able to try out the newly launch Olympus OM-D E-M 5 Mark II (I gonna call it EM5 II for short). As expected, not only I able to try it, I even got an unit itself to test for today shooting. So I bit farewell to my EM1 in my bag and gear up to shoot with the brand new camera. Shots are mainly taken with my trustworthy Olympus 45mm f1.8.
I am not gonna talk about the specification of the camera though since it can be google easily. I was offered by Robin for the HLD-8 grip but I rejected it because I wanna shoot and feel the camera itself without any accessories. Throughout the whole shooting session, I do complained I miss out the big thing. The large battery grip from EM1. But I like the extruded thumb grip at the back where it really works as a support when I hold the camera single handed. But I guess I won't complain if I got the HLD-8 together since the grip itself actually came with Audio jack for video recording usage. Awesome!
The Olympus EM5 II doesn't feel like a stranger to me. The moment I pick it up, spend few minutes on setting that I usual did on my EM1 and I am ready to go. The button and dials was easily reach by fingers without looking at it (at least the position is close enough to my EM1). EVF perform great and I can't tell it is same or better than EM1. Overall, it just doesn't feel like a stranger to me. Everything is so similar with EM1.
My only complain? The flip screen probably. Not a deal breaker for me but I am just too used to the EM1 swivel screen instead of articulated like EM5 II. When shooting in street today, I realize I tend to spend an extra step to take out the screen when performing low or high angle shots. The particular extra step might make me miss a moment. But I understand shooting video with articulated screen actually feel good. Other than that, the screen actually feel solid eventhough I fear it will break into 2 pieces if something just decided to run over the camera.
Overall, the EM5 II feel like my EM1 and the images are on par, if not better than my EM1. I just spend the whole morning with it and there are alot more things I wanna test out on the EM5 II - the 40MP high res and also video recording! I am tempted to do a short film with it now. Also the Olympus FL-LM3 seem like a nice flash to use.
Of course, our lunch in Wondermama. Taken with the EM5 II as well.
